“I have always drawn and painted, beginning with the usual colouring books and paint by numbers which my fond parents thought would aid my artistic abilities, but which stifled my imagination. I progressed to drawing imaginary people and simple architectural plans.
I particularly love the Pre-Raphaelites, Escher, Kandinsky, Klimpt, Georgia O’Keefe, Hopper, Jack Vettriano, 1930’s poster art, Art Nouveau and Art Deco, to name but a few!
I am fascinated by the close but intriguing confinement of town buildings, the restricted but somehow natural evolvement of lay out, dark alleyways, steps leading nowhere, deserted old factories and ill-considered tower blocks, a glimpse of sea through terraced cottages, and the interacting shapes of all these. My experience of designing and painting theatre sets has had a beneficial effect on my style. My intention with the paintings is to invoke atmosphere, or a sense of mystery and story, above all though I just love doing them, and perhaps they’ll remind people of places they’ve visited or draw attention to the varied and wonderful architecture all around us.”
