Alan has been painting for some forty years, during which time much of his work has been reproduced as prints and cards for organisations such as the National Trust. Introduced to bird watching in his childhood, he soon found that his enjoyment of drawing became a useful tool in helping identification, and so began a lifetime of bird painting. His favourite part of the world is the north Norfolk coast which provides endless painting material.
“Whilst I use photographs for reference, there is nothing like being in the outdoors where nature isn’t limited to a frame in a split second. It changes, it changes all the time and there are no boundaries or limitations. Water is especially fascinating with the interplay of light, shadow and reflection which changes again into a myriad of patterns with a passing water bird. Whilst much of my work is in watercolour, I like to combine this with acrylics, depending on the subject”.
